Benefits of Post Marathon Massage

You’ve been training for months for the ultimate test of mind and body endurance – the Queenstown marathon! You’ve crossed the finish line and the wave of exhilaration and accomplishment runs through you. Congratulations!!! You’ve done it – 42km! Then the reality, and aches and pains start to creep in.

My legs ache, my whole body aches…..I MUST have a massage!!

So what are the actual benefits of having a post marathon massage, what style of massage should I have and when is the best time to have a massage?

In the first 0-48 hours after your marathon, a swedish massage is the best option. Often thought of as a pampering style of massage the swedish massage is great way to start your post marathon recovery journey. It has been shown to decrease recovery time, reduce chance of injury, increase circulation, relieve pain, reduce muscle cramps, reduce inflammation, lengthen your muscles and reduce muscle tension. A swedish massage is also known to release endorphins, aiding in pain relief and can reduce stress hormones like cortisol.

A Deep Tissue massage is most effective massage recovery from the 48 hour mark. As this type of massage works on the fascia and deeper layers of the muscles and focuses on specific areas of tension or injury you don’t want to go too deep, too soon. Your muscles will already be sore from running the marathon and adding more pressure too soon is counter productive.

The Deep Tissue massage works on both superficial and deeper muscles, as well as fascia. It’s usually quite targeted and releases unrequired tension and adhesions The tension and adhesions, left untreated, can lead to incorrect movement patterns and restricted range of motion which ultimately causes overuse injuries.

You are able to run faster and longer with healthy muscle tissues so having regular Deep Tissue massage during your training is extremely beneficial. Regular massage can help to improve mobility, avoid chronic pain and help prevent injury.
